Fun with AI

I decided to try out the new Microsoft Bing Image Creator to try and create some Revere Ware related images.

Revere Ware images much not be a very big part of it’s training model. I love in particular the double long handled pan (looks useful if not easy to bump into one of the handles) and the pan with the logo on the inside.

Again, doesn’t seem to really know what Revere Ware looks like.  It thinks it can throw the name on a kettle and it becomes Revere Ware.  It perhaps does at least know that Revere Ware is a historical brand, as the style of the kettles is not at all modern.

Absolutely no better.  🙂

Replacing a Revere Ware kettle

Revere Ware tea kettles have been off the market since 2018, when Corelle Inc. (now Corelle Instant Pot) discontinued the Revere Ware brand.

But, the market for used tea kettles is quite robust as the listings on eBay demonstrate.

(That’s our eBay Revere Ware listing helper site revereware.org that categorizes all the Revere Ware listings on eBay for your convenience.)

There are over 1,200 listings for kettles on eBay, or about 8% of all Revere Ware listings there.

So if you need to replace your cherished Revere Ware kettle, pick up a used one; with such an abundance of listings, you can surely fine them for a reasonable price.

eBay: great deals on bale handle pots

These have always been a favorite of mine as they are iconic and handy; the bale handle makes it easy to pick them up off the stove and pour the contents out, like when straining spaghetti.  There are a couple of great deals on eBay right now (one and two).

The Frankenpot

I’ve been corresponding with reader Andrew about a double boiler he picked up.

The bottom part is without any handles and has this stamp:

The Revere Copper & Brass Incorporated name was used in the late 1920’s to the late 1930’s I believe.  The top part says made in Korea.

Revere did at some point make double boilers that looked a lot like this, but the bottom had long and short handles on opposite sides.  My best guess here is that the bottom is a vintage storage container and the top is from the 1980’s or so, and they just happen to fit together.  The lid, who knows; it has a Phillips head screw holding the small knob on, which puts it as a more modern lid.

Can anyone shed any light on this apparent Frankenpot?

Goodbye First Class Package rate, hello USPS Ground Advantage

Unbeknownst to us, the USPS revised their shipping types in the last month.  Out is the First Class Package rate and in is USPS Ground Advantage shipping, which is slightly different, but similar.

According to USPS, USPS Ground Advantage will offer lower prices than the existing First-Class Package Service, which is currently the USPS’s most popular package delivery option.

The First-Class Package Service was previously limited to lightweight packages up to 15.999 ounces. Still, in January 2023, USPS redefined it by removing Retail Ground and Parcel Select Ground and expanding the weight limit to 70 pounds. In July 2023, USPS Ground Advantage will replace Retail Ground, Parcel Select Ground, and First-Class Package Service.

Whit USPS Ground Advantage, the price for shipping items weighing up to 15.999 oz is determined by both their weight (rounded up to 4 oz, 8 oz, 12 oz, and 15.999 oz) and the distance to their destination. For packages weighing more than 15.999 oz, the shipping fee is based on a per-pound rate up to a maximum weight of 70 lbs (rounded up).

However, some optional features currently available with First-Class Package Service will not be included in USPS Ground Advantage. Customers will no longer be able to use Certificate of Mailing and Certified Mail with USPS Ground Advantage, but these services will still be offered with alternative products such as Priority Mail.

USPS Ground Advantage aims to offer faster delivery times and more reliable tracking information, and it will be available for both commercial and residential customers. The new USPS Ground Advantage service will be cheaper, faster, and better at helping you schedule shipments and manage customer returns.

Unfortunately, our shipping cost calculator for our website order system requires us to choose specific shipping tiers to support, and once the USPS system was no longer returning quotes for the First Class Package rate, our system defaulted to the next higher rate, Priority Mail.

This resulted in shipping costs about twice as expensive, but also meant packages got there faster.

We discovered the error after a couple of weeks and updated everything to have the proper support for the new Ground Advantage rate a week ago, so everything is back where it should be.

Wooden cookware handles?

I was looking to help someone find a generic replacement handle solution for a 90’s era Revere Ware pot, and did a search on Amazon.  Much to my surprise, they were a lot of results for wooden replacement handles and knobs.  I wonder what is driving the sudden foray into making replacement handles out of wood.

Granted, wood is a good insulator and some people have turned to wood to craft a bespoke replacement handle when he couldn’t find one.  But still, is this a trend being driven by something else?  Is there new cookware that is suddenly popular that has wooden handles and knobs?  I wonder.

Interesting percolator with some differences, possibly sales sample

Reader Adam sent us some pictures of an interesting percolator that has some differences from all of ours.  At first glance, it looks normal.

However, the handles were held on by brass rivets instead of a screw / nut.

On the inside, there is a grid of holes at the spout:

All of ours just have a larger hole at the bottom and a smaller hole at the top in that area.

Someone suggested it was a sales sample.

eBay Revere Ware deal of the week – bale handle pot

Bale handle pots are nice, and they are vintage era so good quality.  This one on eBay with a shipped price of just over $50 is an awesome deal for a relatively rare items like this.

Importantly, it has the bale handle Bakelite and it is in good shape.

Don’t be too concerned about the dark stained inside bottom.

That is almost certainly burnt hard water deposits.  A good soak pure vinegar, with intermittent heating and scrubbing will get ride of it, then follow with a polish with Bar Keepers Friend.
